There is normally no objection to an applicant introducing, by amendment, further information regarding prior art which is relevant; indeed this may be required by the examiner (see II, 4.3 and II 4.18). Nor will the straightforward clarification of an obscurity or the resolution of an inconsistency be objected to. If, however, the applicant seeks to amend the description (other than references to the prior art), the drawings or the claims in such a way that subject-matter which extends beyond the content of the application as filed is thereby introduced, the application as so amended cannot be allowed.
